For the Crust:

  • 2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 1/2 cups unsweetened applesauce
  • 1 cup granulated sugar
  • 1/2 cup vegetable oil
  • 2 large eggs
  • 1 tsp baking soda
  • 1 tsp ground cinnamon
  • 1/2 tsp ground nutmeg
  • 1/2 tsp ground cloves
  • 1/2 tsp salt
  • 1/2 cup chopped walnuts (optional)

Instructions

1. Prepare the Crust:

  1. Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease and flour a 9×13-inch baking pan.
  2. In a large bowl, whisk together flour, baking soda, cinnamon, nutmeg, cloves, and salt.
  3. In another bowl, mix applesauce, sugar, oil, and eggs until well combined.
  4. Gradually add the dry ingredients to the wet ingredients, stirring until just combined. Fold in walnuts if using.
  5. Pour batter into the prepared pan and bake for 30-35 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted in the center comes out clean.
  6. Let cool in the pan for 10 minutes before transferring to a wire rack to cool completely.
