For the Crust:

  • 1 cup all-purpose flour
  • 1 cup granulated sugar
  • 1/2 cup unsweetened cocoa powder
  • 2 teaspoons baking powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 cup milk
  • 1/4 cup vegetable oil
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1/2 cup chopped pecans
  • 1 cup brown sugar
  • 1 1/2 cups hot water

Instructions

1. Prepare the Crust:

  1. Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease a 9-inch square baking pan.
  2. In a large bowl, whisk together flour, granulated sugar, cocoa powder, baking powder, and salt.
  3. Add milk, vegetable oil, and vanilla extract to the dry ingredients. Stir until well combined.
  4. Fold in chopped pecans, then spread the batter evenly into the prepared pan.
  5. Sprinkle brown sugar evenly over the batter, then carefully pour hot water over the top (do not stir).
  6. Bake for 30 minutes or until the top is set but the center remains gooey. Let cool slightly before serving.
