A classic New Orleans dessert made with French bread, rich custard, and a decadent whiskey sauce.

For the Crust:

  • 1 loaf French bread (stale, cut into cubes)
  • 4 cups whole milk
  • 3 large eggs
  • 1 cup granulated sugar
  • 2 tbsp vanilla extract
  • 1 tsp ground cinnamon
  • 1/2 tsp nutmeg
  • 1/2 cup raisins (optional)
  • 1/2 cup unsalted butter (melted)
  • 1 cup brown sugar
  • 1/4 cup whiskey or bourbon
  • 1/2 cup heavy cream

Instructions

1. Prepare the Crust:

  1. Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease a 9×13-inch baking dish.
  2. In a large bowl, whisk together milk, eggs, granulated sugar, vanilla, cinnamon, and nutmeg.
  3. Add bread cubes and raisins (if using) to the mixture. Let soak for 15 minutes, pressing down occasionally.
  4. Pour mixture into the prepared baking dish. Drizzle melted butter over the top.
  5. Bake for 45-50 minutes until set and golden brown.
  6. Meanwhile, make the sauce: In a saucepan, combine brown sugar, whiskey, and heavy cream. Simmer for 5 minutes until slightly thickened.
  7. Serve bread pudding warm with the whiskey sauce drizzled on top.
