Instructions

  1. In a large bowl, whisk together the flour, baking soda, ginger, cinnamon, cloves, and salt. Set aside.
  2. In another bowl, cream together the butter and brown sugar until light and fluffy. Beat in the molasses, egg, and vanilla extract until well combined.
  3. Gradually mix in the dry ingredients until a dough forms. Divide the dough in half and wrap in plastic. Chill for at least 1 hour.
  4. Preheat oven to 375°F (190°C). Roll out the dough on a lightly floured surface to about ¼-inch thickness.
  5. Cut out gingerbread house pieces using a template: two sides, two ends, and two roof pieces.
  6. Place pieces on a baking sheet and bake for 8-10 minutes, until edges are firm. Cool completely before assembling.
