Description

A classic holiday recipe for building and decorating a gingerbread house with spiced dough.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 2 1/2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 teaspoon ground ginger
  • 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • 1/2 teaspoon ground nutmeg
  • 1/2 teaspoon baking soda
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 cup unsalted butter, softened
  • 1/2 cup brown sugar
  • 1/2 cup molasses
  • 1 large egg
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract

Instructions

  1. In a medium bowl, whisk together the flour, ginger, cinnamon, nutmeg, baking soda, and salt.
  2. In a large bowl, beat the butter and brown sugar until creamy.
  3. Add the molasses, egg, and vanilla extract to the butter mixture and beat until combined.
  4. Gradually add the dry ingredients to the wet ingredients, mixing until a dough forms.
  5. Wrap the dough in plastic wrap and chill in the refrigerator for at least 1 hour.
  6. Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C) and line baking sheets with parchment paper.
  7. Roll out the dough on a floured surface to 1/4-inch thickness and cut into house shapes.
  8. Bake for 10-12 minutes or until edges are firm. Let cool completely before assembling.
  9. Use royal icing to glue the pieces together and decorate as desired.

Notes

For best results, let the gingerbread cool completely before assembling. Use colorful candies for decoration.
