Description

  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • Decoration:
  • Fresh pine sprigs
  • Fresh cranberries or red berries
  • Powdered sugar for dusting

Instructions

  2. 1. Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease and flour two 9-inch round cake pans or a wreath-shaped pan.
  3. 2. In a large bowl, whisk together flour, sugar, baking powder, baking soda, and salt.
  4. 3. In another bowl, mix buttermilk, oil, eggs, vanilla, cocoa powder, and red food coloring until combined.
  5. 4. Gradually add wet ingredients to dry ingredients, mixing until just combined. Do not overmix.
  6. 5. Divide batter into prepared pans and bake for 25-30 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted comes out clean.
  7. 6. Cool in pans for 10 minutes, then transfer to a wire rack to cool completely.
  8. Frosting and Decoration:
  9. 7. Beat cream cheese and butter until smooth. Gradually add powdered sugar and vanilla, beating until fluffy.
  10. 8. Assemble the cake into a wreath shape using one of the cakes as the base and cutting the second.

Notes
