- 2 1/4 cups all-purpose flour
- 2 teaspoons ground ginger
- 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
- 1/2 teaspoon ground cloves
- 1/4 teaspoon salt
- 3/4 cup unsalted butter, softened
- 1 cup granulated sugar
- 1 large egg
- 1 tablespoon water
- 1/4 cup molasses
Instructions
- In a medium bowl, whisk together the flour, ginger, cinnamon, cloves, and salt.
- In a large bowl, beat the butter and sugar until creamy.
- Add the egg, water, and molasses to the butter mixture and beat until combined.
- Gradually add the dry ingredients to the wet ingredients and mix until a dough forms.
- Wrap the dough in plastic wrap and chill for at least 1 hour.
- Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C).
- On a floured surface, roll out the dough to 1/4-inch thickness.
- Cut out gingerbread men shapes and place on a baking sheet.
- Bake for 8-10 minutes or until edges are firm.
- Cool on a wire rack.
Notes
For softer cookies, avoid overbaking. Decorate with royal icing if desired.
