- 8 ounces elbow macaroni
- 4 slices bacon, cooked and crumbled
- 2 cups shredded white cheddar cheese
- 2 tablespoons butter
- 2 tablespoons all-purpose flour
- 2 cups milk
- 1/2 teaspoon salt
- 1/4 teaspoon black pepper
- 1/2 cup breadcrumbs (for topping)
Instructions
- Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C).
- Cook the macaroni according to package instructions; drain and set aside.
- In a large skillet, cook bacon until crispy; remove and crumble, reserving 1 tablespoon of bacon grease.
- In a saucepan, melt butter with the reserved bacon grease over medium heat. Stir in flour and cook for 1 minute.
- Gradually whisk in milk, salt, and pepper. Cook until thickened, about 5 minutes.
- Stir in shredded cheese until melted and smooth.
- Mix in the cooked macaroni and crumbled bacon.
- Transfer to a baking dish, top with breadcrumbs, and bake for 20 minutes or until bubbly and golden.
Notes
For a spicier version, add 1/2 teaspoon of cayenne pepper to the cheese sauce.
